Obituary for Dewayne Leon Whitehead
Dewayne Leon Whitehead, age 64, a lifelong resident of Harrisburg, Illinois transitioned from this life onto the next on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Kindred Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born on June 3, 1955 in Harrisburg, Illinois to Tanny and Mary (Greenwell) Whitehead. He practiced his faith in God at a young age as a Methodist over the years becoming a member of the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Dewayne attended Horace Mann Grade School, Malan Junior High and was a graduate of Harrisburg High School the class of 1974. He went on to further his education, attending Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Illinois. Dewayne really loved to enjoy life, in his youth he and his lifelong friend Charles (Chuckie) Mason shared everything! In his childhood, he was the pitcher for the Coca Cola Team, he played various positions for the junior high varsity Redbirds and a forward and center for the senior varsity Harrisburg Bulldogs. Dewayne was an avid sports fan and a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He enjoyed good company, family and friends, making sure everyone had a good time, even if it meant an occasional Miller High Life and a shot of Hot Damn. Dewayne loved to Barbeque, play cards, dance, music and the company of treasured buddies; Chuckie, Tony, Greg Mason, Charles Mason Sr., Doug, Donnie, Kenny, Joe, Greg Ozment, Ray, Brandon, Steve, Keith, Mike, Kelly, Rick Garnett, Big Red, Bill and Mickey, just to mention a few.
Dewayne started his working career at a young age working for Pool Pontiac, Harrisburg Street and Alley Department, Harrisburg High School as a janitor for the Unit 3 School District. Later he was employed by Hucks convenience store in Harrisburg, Illinois, and eventually worked for Aisin Manufacturing in Marion, Illinois. This association led him to a job at Auto Zone in Harrisburg, Illinois. Dewayne’s career lead him to join employment with IGA grocery store in Harrisburg, Illinois which helped further guide him to a career at Kroger’s as a Utility/ Courtesy Clerk where he became a friendly and familiar face in the community.
Left to cherish Dewayne’s memory are, Lillian Green of Texas. Daughter, Roberta Brown of Texas. Brother, Paul Whitehead of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sisters, Louise ”Robert” Green of Elgin, Illinois, Lora E. Neal of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, June Acevedo of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Carol (Herb Tate) Whitehead of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and a host of nieces and nephews. Dewayne’s extended family; Significant other, Lisa Bacon of Harrisburg, Illinois, Tyrenai Bardo, Freddie (Angel) Bardo, Ebony, Brandon Smith, Jersey, Jade Bardo, and RayZhaun Bardo, So-Nibia (Eusa) Carter, Kane Carter, Alexandra Carter, Ameliah and Elijah Taborn-Scott. Brother In-laws: Keith, Brian, Robert, Tony, Northern, and James (Jennifer) Dismuke. Sister In-law, Tracy Habtemariam and her children, Yonas, Gabriel , Noah, and Raven.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his daughter: Tondra Disroe. Brothers: James Whitehead, Earl Whitehead, Jerry Whitehead and Joseph Boone and Brother In-law, Telesforo "Tato" Acevedo.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisburg, Illinois with Rev. Torrence Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg, Illinois. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Sunday at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home.
