Obituary for Roxanna B. "Roxy" Nicholes
Roxanna B. Nicholes, age 79 of Harrisburg, Illinois passed away peacefully at 6:47 A.M. Thursday, March 24, 2022 at home.
Roxy was born on July 17, 1942 in Peoria, Illinois to Charles and Esther Bailey Buse. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1960 and from the University of Illinois in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.
In 1968 she married Macauley “Mackie” Nicholes in Mason City, Illinois. They both taught in Northern Indiana for three and a half years before moving to Harrisburg, Illinois in 1972 to open a Monical’s Pizza. Later it became “Mackie’s Pizza”.
Roxy quickly settled in Harrisburg. Opening a new restaurant with a newborn baby, there was no challenge she couldn’t meet. She also taught Spanish at Ridgeway High School in Ridgeway, Illinois for a few years. The “Pizza House” kept Roxy quite busy. She loved working there where many customers quickly became friends. She employed thousands of kids over the years, giving many their first job. This same restaurant she and Mackie took a chance on all those years ago will turn 50 years old on March 28, 2022.
Roxy was passionate about several things, with one being sports. She loved all Harrisburg Bulldog Sports and of course her beloved Illini. Even after her kids had graduated and moved on from high school and college sports, she could still be found at a ball game cheering on the Bulldogs, Salukis, or Illini.
Roxy was a member of PEO Chapter Z, AAVW and several other organizations. On Mondays she could be found playing Bridge with her beloved Bridge Group. A group of ladies so special and dear to her heart. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg where she was an elder.
Roxy is survived by her son, Robbie Nicholes of Harrisburg, Illinois. Daughter, Nancy (Rick) Owen of Banner Elk, North Carolina. Son, Martin (Whitney) Nicholes of Harrisburg, Illinois. Her most precious grand children, Hampton Macauley Owen, Frankie Leigh Nicholes and Quincy Roxanna Nicholes, John McPeek her loyal friend and employee, and “adopted” son of over 30 years. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, generous spirit and loving heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mackie Nicholes, parent, Charles and Esther Buse and brother, Randy Buse.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg at 34 W Poplar or Harrisburg High School Athletics at 333 W College.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg with Rev. Laurie Fields officiating.
