Obituary for Jane Leathem
Jane E. Leathem, 72, of Carthage died at 1:55 P.M. Wednesday March 15, 2017 in her home after a short battle with cancer.
Jane was born on October 26, 1944 in Springfield, Illinois the daughter of Dr. Paul and Nancy Grosboll Hendren. Jane moved to Carthage with her parents and her brother Paul following her Father’s Graduation in the first class of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in 1952. On July 19, 1975 she was married to Bruce Leathem in the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage.
Jane graduated from Carthage High School in the class of 1962. She then attended the Burlington Beauty Academy and became a Registered Beautician. She then attended Illinois State University at Bloomington – Normal, graduating in 1968 with a degree in Home Economics. Jane taught school in Ft. Madison, Ia for ten years. She later became a day therapist at the Hancock County Mental Health Center, a position she kept for twenty years.
Jane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage where she served as a Deacon and as the memorial committee treasurer for over 20 years. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter J, she served on the board of the Shephard’s pantry and for over forty years was involved in the Carthage Christmas Club. Jane was a member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and the Memorial Medical Clinic. She loved playing cards and visiting with anyone she met. She was an excellent cook, loved her home and her family.
She is survived by her husband Bruce of Carthage, her daughter Tammy Leathem of Denver, CO. Her son Tommy (wife Erin) Leathem of Starkville, MS and their three children Addison, Brady and Katelyn, a sister in law Suzanne Hendren of Champaign, IL Also surviving are her Aunts Clara Jean Grosboll, of Petersburg, IL, Winona Alvey and Betty Jane (James) Black all of Harrisburg, IL, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins that she dearly loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her Brother Paul on January 11, 2017.
Graveside services will precede burial 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 20, 2017 at Sunset Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Bill Dye officiating. Friends may call after 11 AM at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
