Obituary for Danny Ragan
John Daniel “Danny” Ragan 63 of Harrisburg passed away 12:52 PM Thursday, October 19, 2017 in Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born April 1, 1954 to Gene and Bonnie Shetler Ragan. On April 3, 1976 he married the former Kathy Bean and she survives. He was a life long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Harrisburg where he served on the Parish Council and Finance Committee, a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1974, Harrisburg Elks Lodge, Sons of The Legion, Second Team and Habitat for Humanity board member for 10 years.
Danny developed a work ethic early in life. He had a paper route, mowed yards, was the janitor at Teen Town and tended Fuzzy’s Pool Hall. He started working for Mohr Value in 1972 as a stock boy and became assistant manager before leaving in 1976 to work for the City of Harrisburg Water & Sewer Department where he became Superintendant of that department. He also was the secretary and later President of Local 815 IU of OE. In 1984 he went to work at Kerr-McGee and American Coal as a roof bolter and worked long wall and later an examiner. In 2000 he became Saline County Treasurer which he held until 2016 when he retired. Danny was also a Township Trustee, Township Clerk, 8 years as a Saline County Board member and in 2012 was the Zone 1 Treasurer of the Year.
Surviving Danny are his mother Bonnie Ragan of Harrisburg, his wife Kathy, 2 sons; Zack & Megan Ragan of Lake St. Louis, MO and Luke and Jo Ragan of Harrisburg. 1 brother Steve Ragan of Harrisburg and 1 Sister Beth Williams of Harrisburg and 2 grandchildren, Chris and Brandon Ragan. Several nieces, nephews and cousins including Kristi Sirtak, Josh Ragan, Billy Ragan, Nolen Ragan, Hayley Marks, Christian Williams, Kristen Parks, Tyler Parks, Michelle Bradley, Heather Davis and Kyla Webb.
He was preceded in death by his father Gene Ragan and his father and mother in law Delmon & Mary Bean and a brother in law Kevin Bean.
Funeral Mass will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 23, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Harrisburg with Fr. Abraham Adejoh and burial in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Harrisburg. The J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
