Obituary for Danny Winters
Danny Winters, age 72, of Harrisburg, Illinois passed away Monday, December 25, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones at his residence. He was born on May 4, 1951 in Harrisburg, Illinois to Eugene and Louise (Mann) Winters.
Dan loved life and he definitely lived life his way. He was a graduate of Harrisburg High School class of 1969 and attended John A. Logan. However, his passion in life was to be outside and enjoy all that the great outdoors had to offer. Dan spent most of his free time with friends, family and experiencing a variety of small adventures. Including hiking trips to the Smokey Mountains, camping often, many summers spent at Kentucky Lake, the Ohio River and Lake of Egypt where he would ski and sail his boat and even riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle or enjoying some vintage cars on a nice sunny day. Although Dan was never one to stay still or indoors for long, he did enjoy days spent inside listening to good music, reading a book or watching movies with his son Craig.
Dan wore several hats throughout his lifetime. The most memorable being opening Dan’s Place in 1980 with his parents; together which they ran until 1992. Dan wasn’t the type who enjoyed working for someone else. In 1998, he decided to pursue construction full time and started Southern Construction and Development, which he ran until his retirement.
He also participated in many organizations and in 2004, he was appointed to the Illinois Council of Development Disabilities, which he served on for several years. Being on the council was something he was proud of, as was his son Craig. Dan was part of the Carpenters Union and the local Elks Lodge BPOE 1058 where he made many friends and brought countless smiles and laughs to those around him.
Surviving are his loving wife, Janet (Keith) Griffin. Sons, Craig Winters of Beardstown, Illinois and Nate Griffin of Harrisburg, Illinois. Daughter Kassie and husband Brad Ledbetter of Harrisburg, Illinois. Two grandchildren, Levi Griffin and Jacob Stephan of Marion, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
A celebration of life will be held at the Elks Lodge in Harrisburg, Illinois on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 1:00 P.M.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and Washington Place, a part of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois where his son Craig currently resides.
