Obituary for Amy Elizabeth Peterson
Amy Elizabeth “Mamie” Peterson, of Harrisburg, Illinois, daughter of Emil and Patricia Peterson, sister to Suzanne J. Miller (Jeffrey) of Pembroke Pines, Florida and mother to Celia J. Roark of Harrisburg, Illinois. Aunt to Jessi Miller and Alex Miller of Florida. Niece of Kenneth McSparin, Paul (Kim) McSparin of Harrisburg, Illinois. Paul, Jennifer and Christopher McSparin and many cousins passed away 7:00 P.M. Monday, November 1, 2021 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her father, Emil G. II, grandparents, Paul and Anna Faye McSparin, Emil II and Mary Etta (John) Matthews. Uncles Greg McSparin, Jeff Peterson and Dick Peterson.
Amy attended Unity High School in Tolono, Illinois. She graduated from Central High School in Champaign, Illinois. While in high school she swam on the Champaign County Swim Team and played piano at the U of I conservatory. Amy had a long college career. She finished her BA in Psychology and Sociology from SIU. She got all the way through her certification to teach K-12 Special Education from EIU.
Amy’s civic duties were of many sorts. Former member of the Beta Sigma Phi, United Way of Saline County, Fowler-Boram Foundation and a current member of Elks BPOE 1058 in Harrisburg, Illinois. Amy volunteered as a GED instructor through SIC, at Heaven’s Kitchen, Aldersgate Methodist Church and North American Baptist Church.
She loved art, music, gardening, cooking and doing things with her daughter Celia when she was home. Amy had done dialysis for 7 years. She fought diligently against Renal Disease. Amy leave behind her closest of friends, Libby Diefenbach, Kim Wright, Tammy Warl and Marlys McCulley-Sutton.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 5, 2021 at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg, Illinois. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 5, 2021 at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home.
