Obituary for Rev. George Frederick Schmink
Rev. George Frederick Schmink, 93, passed away October 5, 2020.

He was born on January 3, 1927 in Decatur, IL to Solomon and Anna Hanks Schmink. He married Doris Powell Schmink on June 27, 1948, and she preceded him in death on July 28, 1992. He then married Paula Swan Schmink on January 8, 1994 and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2016. One son, David, preceded him in death on June 23, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Grace Shearer.

Survivors include four sons, Mark & Nanette Schmink of The Villages, FL, Rick & Jane Schmink of Genoa, IL, Robert Schmink of Harrisburg, IL, Keith & Diane Schmink of Springfield, IL, one daughter-in-law Melissa & Bobby Wallace of Champaign, IL two step-daughters Gina & Doug Newlin of Pittsburg, IL, and Cindy & Scott Sissom of Kellyville, OK. Surviving also are 13 grandchildren: Matthew (Paula) Schmink, Whitney (Jason) Wright; Dr. Jason (Samantha) Schmink, Alex Schmink; Danielle (Dave) Rundquist; Kirk (Mary Beth) Schmink, Katelyn (Kevin) Fuchs, Abigail Schmink; Jennifer (Jonathan) Claytor, Laura (Eric) Elliott; Adam Parks; Tatiana Sissom, & Erin Sissom. Also 17 great-grandchildren: Ethan & James Schmink; Cole, Luke & Elliana Wright; Reagan, Madison & Lincoln Rundquist; Kenton & Kolton Fuchs; Margeta Schmink; Elise & Nolan Claytor; Caden & Chloe Elliott; Kaleb Greer & Aden Parks and 2 foster great-granddaughters, Bria & Amiya. A nephew, David Leigh Shearer, and niece, Ruthanne Shearer.

Following college, George served three years in the US Air Force Reserves, four years in the US Army Reserves and taught high school math in Delavan, IL prior to going to seminary at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL. Following completion of seminary, he served pastorates in Bryant (1953-1956), Moline (1956-1958), Springfield (1958-1963), Sullivan (1963-1967), Harrisburg (1967-1975), Streator (1975-1981), East Moline (1881-82) and Rochester (1982-1989). He retired from the pastorate in 1989 but served as Director of Development at Springfield First United Methodist from 1990 to 1992.

George’s life was devoted to family, faith, and friends. He was a pastor who brought to life the Scriptures for everyday people. He charged people to be their best, helped them to discover and strengthen their faith, and supported and encouraged them in light and dark times. He was friendly, forthright and faithful to the various congregations and communities he served as Rev. Schmink. His smile, hearty laugh, zest for life, and wit touched many hearts. He shared his love of good music, poetry, and the great outdoors with many.

His claimed greatest success was his family, beginning with his two wonderful wives. He involved himself with each generation with great love, interest, time, encouragement and support.

A memorial service in his honor will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, IL. A graveside will follow the service in Sunset Cemetery. An additional graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 11, at 2:00 pm in the Rochester Cemetery in Rochester, Illinois. Covid restrictions of masks and physical distancing will be honored. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Preacher’s Aid Society.
