Obituary for Thomas William Fleege

Thomas William Fleege, age 79, of Harrisburg, Illinois passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones at his residence. He was born on September 18, 1943 in Dubuque, Iowa to the late Donald and Patricia Jean Gunn Fleege. 


Tom attended St. Michael's Catholic School and graduated from Galena High School where he participated and was successful in football, basketball and baseball. He was an avid sports enthusiast and supported children and youth programs. He attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Tom proudly served in the United States Army, serving overseas during the Vietnam War. He retired from John Deere as a production supervisor and was contracted several times to train new supervisors. He was a member of the Galena Elks for over 50 years and was a member of Harrisburg Kiwanis for 10 years taking leading roles in both organizations. Tom was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and attended the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, Illinois. Tom married Sharon O’Neal Behnke of Harrisburg and she survives.


Surviving are his wife Sharon Fleege of Harrisburg, Illinois. Son, Anthony and wife Paula Fleege of Carterville, Illinois.  Daughter, Tricia and husband Doug Ettin of Washington D.C. Stepsons, Bryce and wife Elena Behnke of Loganville, Georgia and Blake and wife Katie Behnke of Harrisburg, Illinois. Stepdaughter, Brooke and husband Carey Harbison of Raleigh, Illinois. Brothers, Mark and wife Teresa Fleege of Canyon Lake, California and Niles and wife Sheila Fleege of Placerville, California. Sisters, Susan and husband Henry Oxnard of Spring, Texas and Paula and husband Richard Thiltgen of Spring, Texas. Eleven Grandchildren, Madison Fleege, Megan Fleege, Adelei Behnke, Elle Behnke, Gracie Behnke, Laura Behnke, Joseph Behnke, Jack Behnke, K.C. Behnke, Emma Tess Harbison and Leah Harbison.


He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Special aunt and uncle Babe and Orion Ehredt.


Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, Illinois with Rev. Bryce Behnke and Rev. Lynette Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements in care of the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg, Illinois.


Memorial contributions may be made to Harrisburg Kiwanis youth programs or Galena Elks food basket programs.
