Obituary for Dennis N. Mitchell
Dennis Mitchell, 70 years old, of Rual Mountain Road Herod, Illinois, passed away January 1, 2022 at Harrisburg Medical Center after suffering from many years of health problems. His beloved wife of 48 years Mary (Seets) Mitchell always at his side, and who survives.
Dennis was born October 7, 1951 to the late Gerald Woodrow Mitchell and Oveta (Gibbs) Wright in Hammond, Indiana. He moved back to Southern Illinois in the early 70’s arriving in on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Mary and Dennis were married July 4, 1973, of this union one son Christopher was born. He was a special boy that mom and dad provided him with fun, taking him to oceans, stock-car races, Disney, the Grand Canyon to fill his many days until his passing at the age of thirty-one. Denny as he was known by those who knew him best, hand dug a large elaborate koi pond for Christopher’s fish. Denny’s talents were also evident in his carpentry, painting, and mechanics such as building his prize 39 Ford Coupe Hot Rod. Denny loved fishing and hunting, teaching anyone who wanted to learn, even reloading his own ammunition. Few knew that Denny was an excellent artist, painting many projects giving his works away to special friends and relatives.
Denny worked for both Jakes Tire and then Harrisburg Housing Authority until his disability from illness and disease forced his retirement. Health problems limited Dennis but his zeal for life was evident. If and when he and Mary could, they would gather friends and relatives to their humble farm “The 100 Aker Woods”, for a cook out, Mary’s home cooking, a good game of horse shoes or corn hole, shooting guns or a blast from his own hand made cannon. Being surrounded with laughs and good homegrown fun, this was Denny until he just was not able anymore.
Besides Christopher and his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie G. Mitchell. Surviving now only by his wife, Mary and many beloved friends and relatives. Not to mention his little four-legged buddies, Kiwi, Minnie, Friskie, Molly and Bambi.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022 at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home Chapel with a special friend, pastor and hunting buddy James Newby officiating. Friends may call from 12 noon to 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home.
