Obituary for David W. Hauptmann
The party is over. The music has ended. Last dance. Time to go home. David William Hauptmann, ” Hauppy” to his many, many friends, left this earthly party on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. It was one month to the day after celebrating his 70th birthday with those same many, many friends.
David loved music and shared that love and knowledge with all those around him during his busy lifetime. He performed as DJ at many occasions and was seen dancing at most all occasions. He was known to, at any given time, impersonate Elvis Presley, Jackie Wilson, Barry White, Fred Astaire, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and…….well, the list goes on and on. He loved good food, grilling out, Cajun food and…….well, the list goes on and on.
He loved his sons Caldwell (Florida) and Ronnie (California) who survive him. He is also survived by a brother, Gene (Harrisburg) who was at David’s side for the last several months to help his brother through to the last. David was proceeded in death by his father John Thomas Hauptmann, mother Ruth Mary Hauptmann, a sister Celeste Ruth Bybee (John), and sister Annette Marie Prather (Tim). His nieces Katie and Amanda Prather also survive. Hauppy is also survived by dear friends Mr. & Mrs. Richard “Bo” Clark and Mr. & Mrs. Mickey “Pank & Mamma T” Pankey all of Harrisburg, who were also at his side for his last dance. It goes without saying he is survived by hundreds of adoring fans.
David graduated from Harrisburg Township High School in 1965 and he remained active with his HTHS classmates in cheering on the Bulldogs and participating in their activities. David went on to attend Southeastern Illinois College graduating in 1967. After Southeastern the next stop in Hauppy’s professional education was Southern Illinois University. He spent time as well honing his music skills at the Golden Gauntlet and food skills at Mary Lou’s in Carbondale. He graduated from SIU in 1969 despite spending too much time at the Student Union Building playing the Name Game. The summer after graduation from SIU he worked at Jack In The Box in St. Louis, one of the first in the country. It is not known how this particular work experience aided in his professional, food or music skills but he always talked about “serving up that secret sauce” while working there. David then moved on the Champaign and the University of Illinois where he received his law degree in 1972. He worked part-time at Murphy’s Pub on the strip in Champaign to keep himself in some cash and nourish his music/food interests. He remained a huge and loyal fan of all the institutions mentioned above. They have lost a huge fan with his passing. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers have lost a longtime fan as well.
David Hauptmann returned to southern Illinois where he first practiced law in Pope County. He located back to Harrisburg where he was elected Saline County State’s Attorney in 1980 and re-elected in 1984. He also served some time as Assistant State’s Attorney in Saline County. Until his retirement in 2016 David ran a successful practice which saw him aiding clients all around southeastern Illinois.
David was member of Harrisburg Elks BPOE #1058 and Sons of the American Legion George Hart Post # 167. He donated his time and resources to a variety of worthy causes throughout Saline County. When at home in Rudement he enjoyed his flowers and plants, gardening, feeding the birds and listening to music. He was an accomplished bridge dancer, road trip singer, and popular music musicologist with none to compare. Above all he was loved by many.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 8, at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home at 211 N. Jackson St. in Harrisburg. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and continue until the funeral service at 1:00 pm. A ritual team from the Harrisburg Elks Lodge will be presenting an Elks Memorial ceremony. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mentors for Kids or the Elks Crippled Children Corporation.
