Betty Jane (Hendren) Black, 94, of Harrisburg, IL died at 7:17 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at her home with her family by her side.
Betty was born in Harrisburg, IL on June 5, 1929 to Gertrude (Andrews) Hendren and Henry Carter Hendren. She graduated from HTHS with the class of 1947.
On September 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to James I Black in the Hendren home in Harrisburg.
Jim and Betty owned and operated Egyptian Wholesale in Harrisburg for nearly 40 years.
She was a member of the McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. She was a member of Shawnee Hills Country Club for many years. She was a member of the Egyptian Shrine Ladies Club of Harrisburg until it disbanded in 2018. Betty loved her line dancing classes.
Betty is survived by her son Stephen and his wife Cindy. Jim and Betty were blessed with twin granddaughters—Lisa (Bart) Schiff along with their two children Camden and Maddy Schiff and Lynlei Schiff all of Harrisburg and Lori McClusky and her daughter Madison McClusky of Harrisburg. She also left behind a host of nieces and nephews.
Her caregivers took wonderful care of her in her home until her passing. Those special caregivers were the Alvey girls, Kathy Paul, and her special hospice nurse Sue Ann Coker.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2019. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws: Mabel and Ezra Black, brothers; Paul Hendren, Gene Hendren, H.C. Jr. Hendren, Donald Jack Hendren, Thelma Robinson, Georgia Jarrell, Mildred Butler, Madge Mick, and Winona Alvey.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 4th at the J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg with Rev. Chris Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Saturday at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in St. Louis or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes with be available at the Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg.
